The relationship between joint hypermobility and patellar instability: A systematic review.

This systematic review investigates the link between joint hypermobility and patellar instability. The study examines whether hypermobility leads to increased risk of patellar instability and assesses the outcomes of treatment for this condition in hypermobile patients. The review includes 18 studies with a total of 4,391 patients, although the quality of evidence is rated as low. Findings suggest a higher prevalence of generalised joint laxity in patients with patellar dislocation, and highlight that surgical interventions, such as MPFLR, may lead to varying outcomes in hypermobile patients, with a notably higher failure rate in those with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). The review underlines the importance of identifying individuals at risk to prevent dislocations and ensure suitable treatment, with close postoperative monitoring recommended for EDS patients following patellar stabilization surgery.
