Sleep disturbance linked to suicidal ideation in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

This study explores the relationship between sleep disturbances and suicidal ideation in individuals with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). The researchers used online surveys, including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire - Revised, to assess 705 POTS patients compared to 170 non-POTS controls. They found that 98.4% of POTS patients reported poor sleep quality, with a significantly lower subjective sleep efficiency of 65.4%. The findings suggest that individuals with POTS experience increased sleep disturbances, which may be associated with a higher prevalence of suicidal ideation compared to the general population. The study emphasizes the importance of improving sleep quality and efficiency as a vital component of enhancing the quality of life for POTS patients.
