EDS

Prevalence of gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, autonomic and allergic manifestations in hospitalized patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: a case-control study.

This study investigates the prevalence of gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, autonomic, and allergic manifestations in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) compared to non-EDS hospitalized patients. The research, using data from the 2016 National Inpatient Sample, reveals that EDS is strongly associated with higher incidences of gastrointestinal conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, cardiovascular issues such as mitral valve disorders, autonomic dysfunctions like POTS, and increased likelihood of food allergies. These associations suggest that hospitalized EDS patients typically experience more complex medical profiles, leading to extended hospital stays. The findings highlight the importance for clinicians to consider EDS in cases with unexplained manifestations in these categories and to exercise caution and tailored management when treating EDS patients in the hospital.
