POTS - Overview and Focus on Non-Pharmacological Approaches | Webinar

In this webinar, experts from the University of Calgary, Dr. Satish Raj and Kate Bourne, provided an overview of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), focusing on its symptoms, diagnosis, and non-pharmacological management strategies. They discussed the diagnostic criteria for POTS, emphasizing the importance of excessive orthostatic tachycardia and orthostatic symptoms. Various common symptoms and comorbidities experienced by POTS patients were reviewed, such as lightheadedness and exercise intolerance. The experts highlighted the role of non-pharmacological treatments, particularly compression garments, which have been shown to reduce symptoms and improve hemodynamic responses by shifting pooled blood back to the central circulation. Data from a recent study was shared, illustrating the effectiveness of these garments in managing heart rate and symptoms in POTS patients. Future directions include evaluating commercially available compression garments and further understanding their long-term benefits and challenges.
