Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and other autonomic disorders after COVID-19 infection: a case series of 20 patients.
The study conducted by Blitshteyn and Whitelaw explores the development of POTS and other autonomic disorders in 20 patients following a COVID-19 infection. The patient cohort, predominantly female, presented with persistent neurological and cardiovascular issues post-infection. Of these, 15 patients developed POTS, while others experienced neurocardiogenic syncope or orthostatic hypotension. Diagnostic tests revealed cardiac or pulmonary abnormalities in six patients, and elevated autoimmune markers in four. While all patients underwent non-pharmacologic treatment, most also needed medications. Despite treatment, 85% still had symptoms 6-8 months later, and 60% could not resume work. This underscores the necessity of thorough diagnostic and management strategies for post-COVID autonomic dysfunction.
