Post-HPV-Vaccination Mast Cell Activation Syndrome: Possible Vaccine-Triggered Escalation of Undiagnosed Pre-Existing Mast Cell Disease?

This research document explores the potential link between human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination with the Gardasil product and exacerbation of undiagnosed mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), thereby possibly triggering postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and related issues. The authors present 11 cases wherein patients developed POTS shortly after receiving the HPV vaccine, with later identification of pre-existing MCAS. They hypothesize that vaccination may have worsened pre-existing but clinically unrecognized MCAS, leading to significant symptoms like POTS. The paper suggests evaluating and managing MCAS prior to vaccinations as a potential strategy to mitigate adverse effects in susceptible individuals. This highlights the need for increased awareness of MCAS as a chronic and prevalent condition potentially interacting with other disorders post-vaccination.
