Neuropsychiatric Manifestations of Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and Response to Mast-Cell-Directed Treatment: A Case Series.
This case series explores the neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), highlighting the critical need for its recognition due to its association with various psychiatric conditions such as depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. The study reports on eight patients who had significant neuropsychiatric disorders that were resistant to conventional therapies and were later diagnosed with MCAS. Many also had comorbid conditions like postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. All patients showed significant improvements in their symptoms after receiving mast-cell-directed treatment, emphasizing the importance of considering MCAS in patients with persistent neuropsychiatric disorders and systemic symptoms.
