MCAS 101 with an EDS Twist - Special Guest Speaker, Dr. Lawrence Afrin

Dr. Lawrence Afrin, an expert in mast cell activation disorders (MCAS), discussed the complexities of recognizing and treating MCAS, particularly its association with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). The presentation highlighted that MCAS symptoms can be highly variable and include chronic multi-system inflammation and allergies. Diagnosis often involves testing for specific mast cell mediators as well as a thorough clinical evaluation. Dr. Afrin explained the potential genetic underpinnings of MCAS, including the presence of numerous mutations affecting mast cell behaviors. Treatment focuses on trigger avoidance, pharmacological interventions, and addressing secondary issues arising from mast cell dysfunction. Dr. Afrin also emphasized the need for more awareness among clinicians and offered to guide interested physicians. The event concluded with a Q&A session addressing common concerns, such as treatment strategies, reactions to allergens, and the challenge of finding knowledgeable physicians.
