Mast Cell Activation Syndrome: More than “just allergies”

Dr. Anne Maitland's webinar discusses the complex nature of Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), its intersection with Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS), and its potential role in co-occurring conditions like POTS and dysautonomia. She explains that mast cells, present in every organ, can trigger hypersensitivity reactions even without typical allergy test results. MCAS is identified by symptoms in two or more organ systems, improvement with histamine blockers, and elevated markers like tryptase. The webinar highlights the importance of understanding mast cells' role beyond traditional allergies, encompassing their response to infections, stress, and trauma, which can exacerbate symptoms. Dr. Maitland emphasizes a comprehensive diagnostic approach, considering potential underlying issues like immune deficiencies, chronic infections, or autoimmune disorders that might drive mast cell activation. She advises educating oneself and working with knowledgeable practitioners, encouraging patients to pursue a thorough exploration of possible triggers and co-morbid conditions.
