Gluten-free diet in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

This study explores the impact of a gluten-free diet (GFD) on individuals with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) who do not have celiac disease. Over a four-week period, 20 female patients with POTS, some of whom also had co-morbid conditions like mast cell activation syndrome and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, followed a GFD. Utilizing the COMPASS-31 questionnaire, significant improvements were noted in orthostatic intolerance, vasomotor, and gastrointestinal symptoms, demonstrating a mean 33.9% reduction in total symptom scores. All participants reported symptomatic improvement, with an average self-assessed improvement of 50.5%. The findings suggest that GFD may help reduce symptoms in POTS, particularly in the domains of orthostatic intolerance and gastrointestinal symptoms, although larger studies are needed to verify long-term efficacy.
