Clinical Spectrum of PASC: Focus on Dysautonomia

This seminar, part of the Recover Research Review series, focused on the clinical spectrum of dysautonomia in the context of Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC or Long COVID). A panel of experts discussed the role of the autonomic nervous system in these conditions, presenting data suggesting that autonomic dysfunctions like POTS are common in patients post-infection, irrespective of initial COVID-19 severity. Proper diagnosis through orthostatic vitals and leveraging available autonomic testing can aid in identifying these disorders. Management strategies were discussed, emphasizing symptom management, lifestyle modifications like volume expansion, and appropriate use of medications such as beta-blockers. The panel also highlighted the need for increased awareness among clinicians to improve diagnosis and management. Further, ongoing research efforts aim to elucidate pathophysiological mechanisms and improve therapeutic approaches, emphasizing the importance of patient education and gradual, personalized treatment plans to improve quality of life for affected individuals.
